Meningococcal disease is rare — but it can become life-threatening within hours.
Meningococcal B is a serious bacterial infection that can develop with very little warning. Many teenagers and young adults carry the bacteria harmlessly in the back of the nose and throat — but in some cases the infection takes hold quickly and causes lasting damage or death.

- Blood poisoning (septicaemia)
- Permanent disability

- Limb loss
- Death
Living in university halls significantly increases close contact with others. Vaccination provides important protection during this higher-risk period.

? We will advise you during your consultationFrequently Asked Questions
Everything patients and parents typically ask before booking a MenB appointment.
Is the MenB vaccine free?
Yes. If you meet the NHS eligibility criteria, your MenB vaccination is provided completely free under the NHS Community Pharmacy Advanced Service. There is no charge for the vaccine or the consultation.
Who is eligible for the NHS MenB vaccine?
Two groups are eligible: young people aged 17–18 (born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008), and students starting undergraduate higher education in Autumn 2026 who are moving into halls or residential student accommodation for the first time.
How long does the appointment take?
Please allow around 15–20 minutes, including a brief consultation, the vaccination itself and a short observation period afterwards.
Is the vaccine safe?
Yes. Bexsero has been used routinely in the UK childhood immunisation programme since 2015 and has a well-established safety profile.
Can I receive the vaccine if I’m an international student?
Yes. International students starting undergraduate higher education in Autumn 2026 and moving into halls or residential accommodation for the first time are eligible. Please bring evidence of your university place or accommodation.
Will my GP be informed?
Yes. With your consent, we will notify your registered GP practice so the vaccination is recorded in your medical record.
Can I book my second dose immediately?
We recommend booking your second dose during your first appointment, so the timing is confirmed and diarised. The second dose is given at least 28 days after the first.
Do I need proof of university?
If you’re being vaccinated under the student eligibility criteria, yes — bring your UCAS confirmation, offer letter or accommodation tenancy agreement. 17–18 year-olds under the age-based criteria do not need university evidence.
Are there any side effects?
Common mild side effects include soreness at the injection site, a mild fever, tiredness or a headache lasting up to a couple of days. Serious side effects are rare.
Can I have the vaccine if I feel unwell?
If you have a high temperature or an active infection, we may recommend rescheduling. A minor cold is usually fine. Our clinician will make the final decision at your appointment.
Demand is expected to be high before university starts.
“The students we vaccinate in July and early August are the ones who arrive in halls fully protected. Leave it too late, and your second dose may not fit before term begins.”
